Ukraine: The Latest – in tribute to David Knowles

Dominic Nicholls and Francis Dearnley pay homage to their friend and colleague

War in Ukraine is reshaping our world. Every weekday the Telegraph’s journalists analyse the invasion from all angles – military, humanitarian, political, economic, historical – and tell you what you need to know to stay updated.
Today however, our team pay tribute to presenter David Knowles, who died suddenly over the weekend. Mr Knowles, 32, died while in Gibraltar on Sunday following what was believed to be a cardiac arrest.
Upon the outbreak of the Ukraine war in 2022, Mr Knowles launched Ukraine: The Latest, a weekday podcast that is still running two years later. This year, Ukraine: The Latest won the Best News Podcast at the Publisher Podcast Awards.
Ukraine: The Latest’s regular contributors are:
David Knowles
David was Head of Audio Development at The Telegraph, where he has worked for nearly three years. He has reported from across Ukraine during the full-scale invasion.
Dominic Nicholls
Dom is Associate Editor (Defence) at The Telegraph, having joined in 2018. He previously served for 23 years in the British Army, in tank and helicopter units. He had operational deployments in Iraq, Afghanistan and Northern Ireland.
Francis Dearnley
Francis is Assistant Comment Editor at The Telegraph. Prior to working as a journalist, he was chief of staff to the Chair of the Prime Minister’s Policy Board at the Houses of Parliament in London. He studied History at Cambridge University and on the podcast explores how the past shines a light on the latest diplomatic, political, and strategic developments.
They are also regularly joined by Telegraph reporters and correspondents around the world, including Joe Barnes (Brussels Correspondent), James Kilner, (Foreign Correspondent and Editor of the Central Asia & the South Caucasus Bulletin), Sophia Yan (Senior Foreign Correspondent), Roland Oliphant (Senior Foreign Correspondent), Colin Freeman (Foreign Correspondent), Danielle Sheridan (Defence Editor), and Tony Diver (US Editor).
To mark two years since the full-scale invasion, we recorded a video special in Kyiv with Oleksandra Matviichuk, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. You can watch that here:
Also marking two years of war, we recorded a special in front of a live audience at the American Embassy in London:
